Permit to Purchase Laws by State

As Iowa Gun Owners prepares to work on legislation that would overturn the current law requiring a law abiding citizen to obtain a ‘permit- to-purchase’ before being allowed to buy handgun for self-defense we would like to point out just how small a minority of states really have this abusive law in place.

The following states DO NOT have to obtain a permit-to-purchase a handgun or any type of weapon:

Alabama
Alaska
Arizona
Arkansas
Colorado
Delaware
Florida
Georgia
Idaho
Indiana
Kansas
Kentucky
Louisiana
Maine
Maryland
Mississippi
Montana
Nevada
New Hampshire
New Mexico
North Dakota
Ohio
Oklahoma
Oregon
Pennsylvania
Rhode Island
South Carolina
Tennessee
Texas
Utah
Vermont
Virginia
Washington
West Virginia
Wisconsin
Wyoming

The following states DO have to obtain a permit-to-purchase:

Connecticut
Hawaii
Illinois
Iowa
Massachusetts
Michigan
Minnesota
Missouri
Nebraska
New Jersey
New York
North Carolina
South Dakota
District of Columbia

That’s right. Upper East Coast states like Delaware, Maryland, Maine, and Rhode Island, the kind of states that most would normally associate with the worst gun laws in the country, have better laws that we do in Iowa when it comes to permit-to-purchase legislation!
