Dear Members and Friends of Iowa Gun Owners,
As most of you already know, Sonia Sotomayor is undergoing her Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearings this week regarding her nomination to the US Supreme Court.
Many in the media are predicting that Sotomayor will be easily confirmed.
However, Iowa Gun Owners (IGO) could not be more strongly opposed to Sotomayor!! Nor do we accept the fact that it is too late to do anything about it.
Sotomayor is one of only a handful of federal judges who said that the recent Heller vs. DC ruling only applies to the District of Columbia and not to the states. (Note, IGO does not believe that we receive our right to keep and bear arms from case law, but Sotomayor’s ruling in light of this case makes us even more opposed to her nomination.)
During the hearings Sotomayor has consistently refused to answer direct questions regarding her personal views on the 2nd Amendment.
What little she has said is scary enough. When asked yesterday by Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, “Is there a constitutional right to self-defense?” Sotomayor responded by saying that the question was abstract and she was unaware of any case law that addressed that issue!!
Make no mistake, Sotomayor would be one of the most liberal Supreme Court justices ever when it comes to your basic right of self defense.
Knowing this, board members from Iowa Gun Owners have been calling Senator Charles Grassley’s DC office every day this week waiting to hear him say that he is voting against Sotomayor.
However, in speaking to numerous aides, all we are being told is that “the Senator is keeping an open mind and will not be making a decision at this time.”
That’s why it’s important that you act today! Call Senator Grassley at 202/224-3744. Tell him that you are a member of Iowa Gun Owners and demand that he vote against Sotomayor.
Don’t forget, Senator Grassley already voted to confirm Attorney General Eric Holder!! Holder, one of the most anti-gun Attorney Generals in history, wants to ban all so called “assault weapons.”
Tell the Senator that voting for Holder was wrong and that a vote for Sotomayor would be even worse!
IGO is working on a variety of means to spread the word to gun owners all over Iowa at this very moment. Please do your part by calling Senator Grassley today at 202/224-3744. The committee vote could come as early as Monday so please don’t hesitate!
