Iowa’s Stand-Your-Ground law was passed in 2017, and while it made major improvements to our self-defense laws, there are still gaps in the law that allow liberal County Attorneys to prosecute gun owners for the ‘crime’ of defending themselves.
Iowa Gun Owners’ legislation would fix these problems, and:
1. Give gun owners the presumption of innocence in a self-defense shooting
2. Protect gun owners who used lawful force from civil and criminal liability
3. Allow Iowans to assert Stand-Your-Ground in a pre-trial immunity hearing
4. Cover the actual and threatened use of justifiable force
5. Clarify that there must be probable cause before arresting someone for self-defense
This legislation passed the House last year but was stalled in the Senate. But this is an election year, and that gives gun owners more leverage.
