With the elections in the rear-view mirror and dozens of new State Representatives and State Senators sworn into office, the 2025 legislative session is well underway in Des Moines.
The first week was largely ceremonial for lawmakers.
Gov. Reynolds, the National Guard Commandant, the State Supreme Court and others gave their speeches.
The biggest lobbying firms and interest groups held dinners off-site after hours, trying to get ‘face time’ with the more senior members of the legislature.
And the freshman were busy trying to figure out how the building and ‘the process’ works here in Des Moines.
But the first week is far from ceremonial for Iowa Gun Owners! We are busy reviewing bills drafts, working with our bill sponsors, and getting bills filed for the year!
You see, after the message that gun owners sent on November 5, we want to press ahead now and do big things in 2025.
And that’s why I am writing to you, to urge you to make your voice heard by signing your petition — telling your lawmakers what you expect this session.

Before you do that, let me explain the situation here in Des Moines at the moment, because it’s different than last year.
There are three camps in Des Moines right now, at least where our gun rights are concerned.
First, are the raging Leftists.
The Democrats we have today at far more liberal than anything we saw ten years ago. They don’t want to make small changes, they want to disarm all of us.
The good news is that their number is shrinking, rapidly, thanks to the members of Iowa Gun Owners.
Second, we have the ‘old guard’ of the Republican caucus. These are legislators who have been in office for a long time, and they think that they’ve ‘done enough’ for gun owners.
Third, we have the sophomore and freshman class of the Republican caucus. These are legislators who were just elected or who have been in office for only a few years. This group knows the times we live in, and they want to pass gun bills!
The Democrats are so few in number we can ignore them.
The issue right now is the ‘old guard’ members of the Republican caucus trying to talk the newer members out of pushing for big expansions of the Second Amendment!
We can’t let this happen.

Americans (and particularly Iowans) spoke loudly last November, rejecting the Left’s views on gun control.
At the same time, we have Islamic terrorists attacking Americans with vehicles, guns, and IEDs (New Orleans.)

It’s time to kick the door down in Des Moines and expand and defend the Second Amendment not just for today, but for generations to come. We are trying to do that, with bills like:
>>> Enhanced Stand-Your-Ground Law; while we passed Stand-Your-Ground law in 2017 that version was weakened. And with Soros prosecutors in Iowa, our law must be strengthened.
Currently if you use your firearm to defend your family from a violent criminal, you’re presumed guilty, and are forced to prove your innocence. Our bill would reverse that, like 16 other states have already done.
In addition, our bill would allow us to assert Stand-Your- Ground protections in a pre-trial immunity hearing.
>>> A Ban on Red Flag Gun Seizures; we’ve defeated these bills for years because they allow our guns to be confiscated by a liberal judge, before we’ve even been charged with a crime!
Now it’s time to outright ban them, just like Wyoming did last year. Our bill requires an Iowan to be convicted of a violent felony crime before the courts could order their firearms to be seized.
>>> The Second Amendment Preservation Act; which would prevent the federal government from using Iowa cops to enforce federal gun control laws.
We will need this after Trump leaves office. And now is the best time to pass SAPA because we won’t have to worry about Trump’s DOJ suing Iowa in court to overturn it the way Biden’s DOJ did when Missouri passed SAPA!
As I said above, these bills are designed not just to protect our gun rights in 2025, but to defend freedom here in Iowa for the next generation!

But these bills aren’t going to move on their own.
Honestly, they never have. We had to flood the legislature will calls and emails and petitions to pass every single bill we’ve ever accomplished in Des Moines.
This year will be no exception.
So please sign the petition that we’ve prepared for you, urging your State Representative and State Senator to co-sponsor, publicly support, and vote for these bills!

But after you do, please consider a donation.

Our country is changing, and not for the better.

P.S. After four years of misery under Joe Biden, gun owners threw off Biden’s agenda and voted for freedom last November.
