As we’ve told you for several years, Iowa’s self-defense laws have gaps in them that leave gun owners vulnerable to a Leftist prosecutor looking to make a name for themselves.
But those days may be coming to an end.
House Study Bill 213 — sponsored by gun rights champion Steve Holt — would upgrade our Stand-Your-Ground law in several ways. What’s more, the bill has already passed sub-committee!
Now, the full Judiciary Committee needs to approve this bill so that it can move onto the full House for consideration.

When we passed Stand-Your-Ground law in 2017 it granted immunity to gun owners in criminal and civil court. The problem was the bill didn’t spell out a process to assert these immunities.
Because of that, the Iowa Supreme Court decided that we can’t invoke these immunities until after a conviction.
That means after you’re a convicted criminal. After you’re broke from legal fees. After your coworkers think you’re a ‘killer.’
That’s ridiculous. And it only hurts law abiding citizens.

HSB-213 would fix all of this by establishing (in the law) that an Iowan accused of a crime following a self-defense shooting can assert their immunity in a pre-trial immunity hearing!
If you assert this defense and the judge agrees with your counsel, any charges filed against you related to this incident will be dropped.

What’s more, this immunity from criminal charges would carry over to civil scenarios, too.
Afterall, it’s not much of a benefit to be cleared from criminal charges only to spend every penny you have to clear your name of spurious civil charges — even if you win, you lose.
Passing this legislation would benefit gun owners in a big way.
Like I said earlier, this legislation has already passed the sub-committee, but it needs to clear the full House Judiciary Committee to move forward, and it needs to happen fast.
Please email the members of the Judiciary Committee now!
After you send your email, please send the pre-written email link to your friends and family and urge them to take action.
I’ll be sure to keep you informed!
