The entire country is still talking about what happened here in Iowa last week.

After 12 years in the Iowa Senate and 6 years in Congress, Randy Feenstra was supposed to be the next Governor of Iowa. He had establishment support, tons of endorsements, millions of dollars and even a last-minute endorsement from President Trump himself.

And yet on Election Night, Randy Feenstra lost to a virtually unknown candidate named Zach Lahn.

The final margin?

Just 1,642 votes.

Ever since then, political consultants, national organizations, campaign operatives, bloggers have all been rushing to claim credit for what happened. Everybody wants to be associated with the upset of the year. Everybody pretends they saw it coming.

Most of them had absolutely nothing to do with it.

Here’s what actually happened.

For months, Iowa Gun Owners flooded the zone with hard-hitting digital advertising designed to make sure Iowa gun owners knew the truth about Randy Feenstra’s record.

While others were obsessing over 30,000’ view talking points, we were laser focused on one thing — making sure gun owners had the facts about Feenstra’s actions on the Second Amendment.

We exposed Feenstra’s vote to ‘Red Flag’ the US military.
We exposed his refusal to back bills to Abolish the ATF.
We exposed his refusal to back bills to Repeal the NFA.

And we exposed the fact that despite representing the most pro-gun congressional district in Iowa, Feenstra spent years doing virtually nothing for gun owners.

But there was another side to this race, too.

While Randy Feenstra had a history of doing nothing for gun owners, Zach Lahn completed his Iowa Gun Owners candidate survey and returned it with 100% pro-gun answers.

That gave Iowa gun owners a very clear choice between a career politician with an anti-gun record and a candidate who was willing to publicly commit himself to defending the Second Amendment.

This contrast played a huge role in Feenstra’s defeat.

In fact, Iowa Gun Owners’ primary video exposing Randy Feenstra’s anti-gun record was viewed more than 324,000 times by gun owners in Iowa.

Not random viewers from around the country. Iowa gun owners — the people we fight for every day.

The results were devastating.

When voters learned the truth about Randy Feenstra’s record and saw a candidate willing to stand with gun owners, many of them reached the same conclusion. They were tired of politicians who campaign as conservatives but refuse to fight for conservative principles once they get to Washington.

That’s why this race matters.

Not because one candidate won and another candidate lost. Not because the media got caught flat-footed. And not because political consultants are scrambling to explain what happened.

This race matters because it reminds every politician in Iowa that gun owners are still in charge.

For almost twenty years, Iowa Gun Owners has operated on a very simple principle. If politicians stand with gun owners, we’ll stand with them. If politicians betray gun owners, we’ll do everything we can to expose them, Democrat OR Republican.

That’s how we passed Constitutional Carry.
That’s how we passed Stand Your Ground.
That’s how we helped pass the Freedom Amendment.
That’s how we lowered the carry age from 21 to 18.

But this fight is far from over.

Because while the political class is still trying to figure out what happened to Randy Feenstra, another threat is already taking shape here in Iowa: Rob Sand.

And make no mistake about it, Rob Sand is the most dangerous Democrat candidate for Governor that Iowa has seen in modern history.

Unlike many Democrats, Sand doesn’t come across as an angry left-wing activist. He doesn’t campaign that way. He doesn’t talk that way. And he certainly doesn’t want Iowa gun owners viewing him that way.

Instead, Sand has spent years carefully cultivating the image of a moderate. That’s why so many Republicans underestimate him.

That would be a mistake.

Because beneath the carefully crafted image is a politician who would be a disaster for gun owners if he ever gains control of Terrace Hill.

Over the coming months, Iowa Gun Owners will expose Rob Sand’s record the same way we exposed Randy Feenstra’s record.

If last week’s election proved anything, it’s that informed gun owners remain one of most potent political fighting forces in Iowa.

Before this election is over, we’re going to prove it again.
