HF-2718 — Iowa Gun Owners’ legislation to ban ‘Red Flag Gun Seizures’ — faces a make-or-break test TOMORROW at 2:30pm in the Senate.
After hearing from thousands of IGO members, the Senate Judiciary Committee has sent this bill to subcommittee.
There are three Senators on this subcommittee. Two are Republicans, Senators Evans and Taylor. One is a Democrat, Senator Quirmbach.
If the subcommittee approves HF-2718, it moves forward to the full Judiciary Committee. If they oppose it, the bill will die.
That is why these Senators must hear from gun owners immediately.

Remember what this legislation does.
HF-2718 bans ‘Red Flag Gun Seizures’ in Iowa once and for all — ensuring that no Iowan will ever have the government seize his firearms based on accusations alone.
A criminal conviction would be required, and that process ensures our due process rights would be protected.
But we know that some jurisdictions may violate HF-2718 and enforce future federal ‘Red Flag’ orders. To guard against that, the bill has civil penalties, allowing a gun owner who was ‘Red Flagged’ the option to sue that agency in court for damages.
This is not a fringe proposal, it’s law in multiple states.
The Iowa House already passed HF-2718 by a decisive 67–29 vote, making it clear how popular this issue is in a GOP-controlled state.
Now the Senate must decide. But this chamber has been very moderate over the last two years. We can’t take anything for granted.

If gun owners are silent, this bill could die.
If gun owners get loud, it will advance to the full committee.
But we also need to guard against weakening amendments that would gut the impact of this bill, especially any effort to remove the critical civil penalties.
So please contact the subcommittee members right now and urge them to approve HF-2718 without changes.
It’s an election year, and everyone is paying extra attention to gun voters right now.
So get loud!
For Iowa,

Aaron Dorr
Chairman
Iowa Gun Owners
P.S. A Senate subcommittee will consider IGO’s HF-2718 tomorrow at 2:30pm. This bill would ban ‘Red Flag Gun Seizures’ here in Iowa — and has civil penalties to ensure compliance.
But if the subcommittee kills the bill, or weakens it with amendments, we would have to start all over next year.
This bill has already passed the House, now it’s time for the Senate to do their job.
Contact the subcommittee today, urge them to approve HF-2718 with no weakening amendments.
