Thirteen years ago, when I started Iowa Gun Owners to deal with Iowa’s oppressive concealed carry laws, there was such a thing as a ‘blue dog’ Democrat in the Iowa legislature.
These were fiscally conservative Democrats who were in the middle of the road when it came to social issues like our great Second Amendment.
If you’ve been involved in the fight for gun rights for a while, you’ll remember that it was House and Senate Democrats (along with a Democratic Governor) who signed ‘Shall Issue’ legislation into law in 2010 — after Iowa Gun Owners members forced their hands.
In fact, almost two dozen of these ‘blue dogs’ voted in favor of that legislation in 2010, knowing that it was the right thing to do and hoping it would help their reelection chances.
Today, everything is different in Des Moines.
Feeling energized by the war against our freedoms playing out in Congress and the White House, radical leftists in Iowa have declared war against the Second Amendment and are feverishly introducing bills like:
>>> H.F. 131; which would put you in the state penitentiary for ten years for the ‘crime’ of buying an AR-15 or a magazine that holds over ten rounds of ammunition!
>>> H.F. 24; which would enact ‘Red Flag Gun Seizure’ laws that would empower liberal judges to order your firearms to be seized based on the word of an embittered ex-spouse during a secret court hearing that you know nothing about, all before you’ve been charged or convicted of anything!
>>> H.F. 65; which would repeal Iowa’s decade old ‘Shall Issue’ legislation and send Iowa back to the era where a sheriff could deny you the right to carry a firearm for any reason they want!
These days every single Democrat in Des Moines hates the Second Amendment and gun owners like you and me who fight to protect it. And they are doing everything they can to crush our right to keep and bear arms!
And these three bills are just three of dozens of gun control bills that gun-grabbers have thrown at us last session alone.
And to be clear, this trend WILL NOT be reversing. In fact, I think it’s only going to heat up as the 2022 elections come into focus. That’s why I am writing you today.
The mission of Iowa Gun Owners has always been to stop gun control, advance pro-gun legislation, and to hold the politicians who stand in the way of those goals accountable.
Each of these efforts are vitally important to the future of our freedoms here in Iowa — but they come at a cost.
And when you combine our work to stop gun control bills in Des Moines with our fight to pass the Second Amendment Preservation Act, while also pouring pressure on Iowa’s Congressional delegation to stop Biden’s war on guns in D.C., the costs add up FAST!
And while I’m able to make budget allotments at the beginning of the year after we complete our annual renewal program, after the first few months of the year, I often am forced to make cuts in our programs because we can’t afford them.
With the growing threats that we are facing, that is the last thing that I want to do.
