For eight long years, we’ve fought against an aggressive anti-gun Senate caucus that has killed major pro-gun legislation.
They’ve blocked Stand-Your-Ground law, Constitutional Carry, and almost a dozen other bills from becoming law here in Iowa.
During that same time, many nearby states have left us behind in the fight for the Second Amendment.
Missouri passed Stand-Your-Ground and Constitutional Carry law in 2016, so did West Virginia, Mississippi, and Idaho.
In 2015, Maine and Kansas did the same thing.
In Iowa, we’ve been battling for votes on these bills — only to be held back by Senators Mike Gronstal, Steve Sodders, and others.
But as you know, gun owners extracted their political vengeance last November by booting half a dozen members of the Senate out of office!
2017 is our chance to see Iowa join the growing list of Constitutional Carry states, but we’ll need all hands on deck to do it.
In a moment I’ll give you a link to a petition that we’ve prepared for you to sign, telling your legislators what you expect of them once they gavel in next Tuesday.
With so many new legislators being sworn in for the first time, it’s essential they realize the grassroots support that this legislation enjoys.
As a reminder, Constitutional Carry is a very simple idea.
If you’re legally allowed to own a firearm, you could carry that firearm for self-defense with no additional permits, fees, or permission needed.
If you want to maintain a permit (or get one for the first time) for reciprocity reasons, you may still do that as Constitutional Carry makes the permits optional.
However, if you don’t want to add your name to a government database just to be able to defend yourself and your family, you wouldn’t have to.
If you can’t afford to pay fees for a permit, you wouldn’t have to.
The Second Amendment would be all you would need to carry — just the way our founding fathers intend it!
Of course, to read the Des Moines Register and other liberal media outlets’ take on it, Constitutional Carry will result in mass violence in the streets.
Didn’t we hear this five years ago, when “Shall Issue” legislation became law?
Every time grassroots gun owners work to improve our gun laws, these lies get brought up. You and I both know they are lies.
But that doesn’t mean that we can sit back and relax.
All too often, once safely back in office, the moderate members of the legislature begin a whisper campaign behind closed doors saying: “We can’t be too extreme.”
I’ve seen this tactic work all too often.
We can’t let that play out in 2017.
The members of Iowa Gun Owners worked too hard in 2016 — making sure that anti-gunners paid a price for killing this very piece of legislation — to not see it become law now.
We also need to have the resources needed to mobilize additional Iowans to this fight.
We need to make Constitutional Carry the loudest issue in the state in 2017 — to ensure that it gets passed into law.
We can do that, in fact, we’ve been laying out a plan to do just that beginning in the middle of January.
But we need the resources to make it happen!
Many of you have renewed your membership for 2017, and for that I sincerely thank you. (If you’ve not renewed, please do so here.)
That influx of support got us back on even footing after the massive election program that we rolled out last fall.
But we’ll need more in order to activate our plan for passage of Constitutional Carry.
Gun owners in Iowa are standing on the precipice of passing historic legislation, having evicted over 35 anti-gun incumbents from office in the process.
We can’t let the momentum escape us now. So please, do what you can right away to help us fund our 2017 program!
Thank you for your activism in support of the Second Amendment. 2017 is going to be a wild ride!
P.S. After fighting tooth and nail for eight years with an anti-gun majority in the Iowa Senate, gun owners are poised to pass Constitutional Carry in 2017!
But this is no time to relax — as Bloomberg, the liberal media, and moderates in the legislature will all be working to stop us!
We’ve got a plan of attack for mobilizing gun owners as we work to pass Constitutional Carry, but we’re low on the funds to activate it. Thank you, for whatever you can do!
