Having run Iowa Gun Owners since late 2008, I remember a time here in Iowa when some Democrats were actually pretty decent on the Second Amendment.
Sure, even back then, the pressure from Iowa Gun Owners members forced them to toe the line, but then-Democratic Governor Chet Culver signed ‘Shall Issue’ into law, a bill that passed out of a Democrat-run House and Senate.
Multiple Democrats voted for our Stand-Your-Ground legislation in 2017, too, begging for a pass from gun owners in 2018. And virtually NONE of them were openly backing gun control.
All that has changed now.
Fueled by Joe Biden’s rise to power and a burning hatred for the Second Amendment and the proud gun owners who have stood tall and defended it here for so many years, today’s Democrats are unhinged in Des Moines.
And that’s why Iowa State Representative Bruce Hunter has just filed H.F. 131 — legislation that would make felons out of any Iowan who buys or transfers an AR-15!
The AR-15 is the most popular rifle in America, and that certainly is true here in Iowa. And it’s easy to see why.
The AR-15 is lightweight, holds plenty of ammo, has virtually no recoil, is easily customizable, and can handle virtually any combination of lights and optics that you need — making it especially popular with women, too!
That’s why the AR-15 is in countless homes and businesses across the state, quietly serving as a defense against criminals and tyrants alike.
Rep. Hunter knows this, and that’s why he wants to ban these popular firearms. You see, Hunter and a growing number of his colleagues in Des Moines are petty tyrants, and they know that before they could ever implement socialism here in Iowa, they would have to disarm all of us first!
Make no mistake, H.F. 131 has nothing to do with stopping crime and it has nothing to do with putting criminals behind bars.
This is strictly about disarming Iowans, and allowing the State to demonize, harass, and prosecute otherwise law-abiding gun owners for the ‘crime’ of owning the most popular rifle in America!
That’s why, tucking into H.F. 131, Rep. Hunter has made buying or transferring a ‘assault weapon’ in Iowa a Class C felony should this bill ever pass!
A Class C felony here in Iowa comes with a TEN YEAR prison sentence! Care to guess what other crimes carry a Class C felony conviction in Iowa?
Drug dealers, charged with the possession of narcotics with the intent to distribute face Class C felonies. Perverts, charged with committing a lascivious act on a child, face Class C felonies. Violent burglars, who harm someone in the commission of a burglary, face a Class C felony. Certain classifications of rapists are charged with Class C felonies.
You see?
To Bruce Hunter and his ilk in Des Moines, gun owners like you and me are no better than rapists, child molesters, and drug dealers and deserve to be locked up for a decade!

And like many of these bills that ban guns or magazines, H.F. 131 comes with a ‘grandfather clause’ that would allow you to keep the guns that you already own.
But here’s the catch: the guns die with you. You could not hand them down to your heirs, you could not sell them, and you could not give them away. Presumably, your family would be forced to surrender your firearms to the state upon your death.
Either way, you and I should be ashamed of ourselves if we sit back and don’t oppose this legislation simply because of any ‘grandfather clause.’
This language is a trap. You see, Hunter and his ilk in Des Moines are playing the long game. They know there is no way to just swoop in and confiscate every AR-15 in the state, even with the force of law.
So rather than advance a bill that bans the immediate possession of an AR-15, Hunter is doing what he can to ensure that your children and grandchildren can never own an AR-15 — all the while hoping that gun owners who currently own these types of firearms to sit back and do nothing.
As a member of Iowa Gun Owners, I know that you are committed to defending not just your right to keep and bear arms, but the next generations’ rights, as well.
Bruce Hunter is challenging all of that.
